So I saw Jurassic World
Jun. 28th, 2015 12:14 pm( (very) minor spoilers )
I liked it
I worked from 2:30pm yesterday until 6:30am this morning.
We got today off though.
So I went to see the Dark Knight Rises.
I can see what some people have complained about and there are plot holes that you can drive a batmobile though, it also relies on movie logic a lot more then the last two, but it’s not as bad a some people have made it out. It’s highly entertaining and I do love the way the sore material has been adapted. I know a lot of people don’t like when things are changed, and it’s true that a lot of time it’s done badly, but it’s necessary. Comics are an entirely different medium from film. Some things have to be changed.
This was it done well.
Also, you can save a lot by how something ends. I liked the ending of this one.I had to squeeze it into a ridiculously long day of running around organising for the film but I managed it.
It was, indeed, awesome.
Or possibly Mission Impossible: Murphy’s Law.
You know how in movies when the protagonists explain the plan before you see it it means something goes wrong? Well in this, something goes wrong, then something else goes wrong, then another thing goes wrong and another. They really keep the tension building.
And it’s funny to. They know when not to take themselves seriously. Getting Simon Pegg in it helps, of course, but the first time you see a message fail to self-destruct until Hunt give some percussive maintenance you know it going to have some good moments in it.
This was a highly entertaining movie. I must admit I was surprised. Well done them.
I highly recommend it.
It was good.
Captain America, as a character, is basically A Nice Guy. They could have easily made it cheesy and campy or gone the other way and changed everything to make it “edgy” but they didn’t. They even got a believable reason for the dorky costume.
I like all the nods they had to fans with the side characters, though I wised they had at least introduced the Howling Commandos by name as, unless you read the comics, you would have no clue who they were.(I so want to see a movie about them.) As it was I could only remember Dum Dum’s name, though I suppose it doesn’t matter as they were just there to basically be bunch-of-army-guys-for-Steve-to-hang-around-with.
And the Hydra salute was ridiculous though it still kind of fit them. It had a whole ‘well Hitler has a one handed salute and I’m totally better then Hitler. I’m going to have a two handed salute’ vibe to the thing.
I also loved how they got the punched-Hitler-in-the-face thing in.
I went to see the early bird special which was in 3D but it turned out to still be cheaper then the next showing which was in 2D.
I think I’ve worked out my problem with 3D. Only things in the middle distance are in focus. I don’t know whether it’s me or the cinema or all 3D but with things far in the background or the extreme foreground I can see the picture overlap. This ruins the stuff-jumping-at-the-camera thing and makes me go cross-eyed trying to bring things into focus.
As for the movie it’s self, well...
( Spoilers, because otherwise I can’t rant about it properly )
I am so glad I didn’t pay full price for this.
Only worth a rent. Maybe.
Not only is it better than X-men Origins: Wolverine, it also strikes it from continuity (along with X3).
:)
( Spoilers, though not in any real detail. )
Good movie, go see it.
Uh.
I probably shouldn’t have gone to the cinema today.
Oh well.
Just saw Thor.
I liked it.
There was really no chemistry between Thor and Natalie Portman’s character save for girl-ogles-the-hot-guy. And they come together with all the inevitability that can be afforded in a Hollywood movie but it’s not coming out of left field so I suppose it’s all right.
Other then that, though, it was good. The character and set design look like they stepped straight off the pages of Jack Kirby’s work. And to do that and not end up looking hooky is impressive. I mean take the destroyer for example:
It’s done very well.
I also like Loki. We all know going in that he’s going to evil (anyone who doesn’t needs to read some basic Norse mythology) but I was worried they were going to just make him stupid evil, evil-‘cause-the-plot-says-I-am-evil. Thankfully they gave him reasons. Yeah it may just be daddy-never-loved-me-like-he-loved-Thor-and-I’m-jealous but that is his character.
( I’m going to go into spoilers now so be warned )
Here’s hoping the Avengers manages to deliver on all it’s promised with these movies.
I just watched the Losers. I wasn’t expecting much from a mindless action movie but this was so…bland. Maybe it was because I kept stopping and starting it but I just couldn’t get invested.
The characters are barely one note, the villains have no real motivation, the plot isn’t anything to write home about and the twists are both expected and yet seem to happen for no reason. I know you can say this about a lot of action movies but at least they’re usually entertaining, with the mindless violence and the explosions. Maybe I’ve just been spoiled with good CGI recently or maybe it’s because they did all the horrible clichés people complain about in action movies (like the overuse of shaky-cam and slow-motion) but this was bad.
It’s a pity too, because the trailer made it look like it could’ve been interesting.
It probably wasn’t the best idea to go to town when I’m still not feeling well, but I was feeling better and I had free tickets.
( No spoilers but there is a TvTropes link )
I needed to do something relaxing today so I went to see Scott Pilgrim Vs the World. A very good movie. You know how Ang Lee tried to get a comic book feel in his Hulk movie. Well this movie does it right. Great fun to watch and excellent fight scenes. I love how everyone just excepts things like super powered vegans and defeating guys gives you coins. It’s great.
I also got a call from the producer. (after the movie, so much for relaxing) Grrr. He wanted to talk about the look of the three ladies we’re filming tomorrow. Not only is this too late to want to go for a style but that’s not your job. It’s the director or possibly the DOP’s. In fact it’s actually mine and I’ve only managed to met them once.
You can ether get this filmed and make do with what you’ve got, or you can demand impossible and we’ll all quit.
Whatever. Back filming tomorrow at 9
Generic fantasy movie was generic.
It was fun to watch though. It was all just an excuse for magic fights, really. And it had the old chosen-one-is-special-for-no-real-reason-but-will-miraculously-kill-a-big-bad-and-we’ll-all-live-happily-ever-after-plot but it was a good movie to veg to. Especially since I had no energy today.
The main guy was good a being a geeky loser with a certain charm so he didn’t become annoying. The only thing was the narrator at the start I think it was the same one they use for all those straight to TV BBC movie. Also, don’t even try to count the plot holes.
Still, it was a pretty OK movie.
I only now got around to watching District 9.
I missed it when it was in the cinema but I always meant to go see it.
It was good, I liked it. It had the classic sci-fi feel of everybody’s-messed-up but it ended on a hopeful note of maybe-things-will-turn-out-ok. It was pretty enjoyable and I’d recommend it.
I also saw Men Who Stare at Goats. Another movie I’d recommend, it’s pretty funny.
I mean it really sucks.
I’d heard it sucks.
But it really sucks.
( It it it it it… really sucks. )
Didn’t see it in 3D so at least I was spared that.
I’ve been watching all the reviews for Interception now that I won’t be spoiled to see what other people think and I have to wonder; is Interception really that confusing?
It’s complicated sure, but I thought they kept everything really streamlined despite that. And it is open to a number of possible interpretations, but that’s just fun.
Oh, well. It’s a brilliant movie anyway.
It’s a good movie, I liked it.
It’s not only a sci-fi movie but it’s also a heist movie. Both types of films I like to watch. For all it’s complexities at it’s core it quite simple. They did this really well( Don’t worry it’s spoiler free )
