It’s a good movie, I liked it.

It’s not only a sci-fi movie but it’s also a heist movie. Both types of films I like to watch. For all it’s complexities at it’s core it quite simple. They did this really well

Unlike other movies that involve the mind or dream states in some way this film stayed away from the obvious dreamlike tricks of fantastic creatures or weird abstract images. It’s got impossible architecture and weird effects but everything is actually kept quite simple. There are small things (all the extras staring at one character) and not so small things (zero gravity in a hotel) but Nolan seams to be trying to keep everything low key. I can only guess this is to blur the confusion between reality and dream for the audience as well as the characters.

As with all of these kinds of stories there is the whole what-is-a-dream-and-what-isn’t thing, which cumulates in a wonderfully evil kick at the very end, but there isn’t any plot twists sprung on us. They’re just not needed. Even if you can see where the story’s going it’s just enjoyable watching it unfold.

The fact that the details of the plot or so complicated, such as the fact that there’s one point were they’re in a dream, within a dream, within a dream…within a dream…possibly within another dream, doesn’t change the fact that everything else is really quite transparent. It’s true that they don’t explain much, for example; the device that lets them do all this is given only one line of throw away dialog to explain were it came from, but I don’t think it’s needed. The story is strong enough to carry everything alone and the special effects, while appropriately beautiful, don’t overwhelm the plot or outstay their welcome. The fight scene in zero G was brilliant for example.

This is definitely a movie I would recommend to anyone, though I’d advise not going out for a break in the middle as you’d probable get really lost.
