A-Team

I saw the A-Team today.   :)

I was a big fan when I was a little kid, even if I forgotten a lot if it by now, so this was a film I was going to watch no matter what. I just had to hope I didn’t suck.

And it didn’t!

It was great fun to watch. It was silly and zany but not campy and all-in-all a good re-make. I was relived.

I did have one problem with it. And it was something I was worried about since I first saw the trailer. They kind of tried to make Face the main character. They’re a team, they don’t have a main guy. I know every single Hollywood movie needs a romantic sub-plot, for some inexplicable reason, and Face is obviously the guy for that. But this whole passing on the torch thing they tried to do for the climax seemed forced. This is really the story of the start of the A-Team, why did you make Hannibal seem so ineffectual at the end? He’s the plan guy, at least let him help.

Also, Face is a con-man, have him run a con, even a small one. We see the results of his cons. The prison scene was great. But we should have seen something.

In fairness though, other then these things the film was fantastic. Murdock was insane, BA was a badass softy. Liam Neeson was a surprisingly good Hannibal, I didn’t expect that. There’s a lot of stuff that would never work in really life, they even kind of lampshades it when Hannibal says his bit about coincidences at the start, but it’s the A-Team, what were you expecting.

I also liked the banter from the minor characters, it made them feel like people.

The homages were good and plentiful but not over the top. The bit at the start where it froze on each character as they appeared was a wonderful call back to the opening credits of the series and they did mange to use the original theme tune in an appropriate area. They also had a little of the many construction montages going on. Even text for the subtitles looked familiar and when the old voice over to hire the A-Team came on at the end I couldn't help but smile.

 

It was fun and crazy and everything the A-Team should be. I’d recommend it.
