It probably wasn’t the best idea to go to town when I’m still not feeling well, but I was feeling better and I had free tickets.

I liked it. I’ve been avoiding spoilers for it but I have been hearing things so I wasn’t expecting anything groundbreaking but it is entertaining. It is a direct sequel to the original, and when I say direct sequel I mean it’s like it was written in the 80’s and just made now. I know people have complained about this, that the original had stuff you had to know something about computers to get but this one doesn’t really update the jargon. I didn’t really mind. Computers in Hollywood never act real anyway, so I wasn’t expecting anything on that front.

The story was also the fairly basic hero-on-a-quest deal. With some twists you can see coming a mile off and a paint-by-numbers ending. But I didn’t mind that. There was one twist in particular I would have been very disappointed if they hadn’t followed up on but that was mainly because he’s awesome and deserves it. (Anyone who’s seen the movie will know what I mean.)

 And, of course, as everyone has said, whether they liked the movie or hated it, it looked, and sounded, wonderful.

 

No, the only really bad thing, the thing that made me cringe every time I saw it on screen, was the de-aged Jeff Bridges. I was just bad. As my sister said, it looked like one of the people from Shrek. And they kept getting close-ups of it! It wasn’t so bad as a still image, the highly rendered backgrounds could hide it, but as this is a movie it was in almost constant motion and looked like a video game cut scene. No wait. In video games the fact that everyone looks like that means it’s not so jarring. Maybe it’s just the uncanny valley but I literally cringed every time I saw it. (And yes, I’m using the literal definition of the word literal.)

 

All in all, it was an enjoyable movie. Not going to live up to any high expectations, but for a trip into nostalgia it was great fun.

 

Or maybe I used up my bad feelings when I was sick.

Oh well.
