As someone how has worked in theatre I've always thought there should be a play about everything that can go wrong on a production.

Edit: I found a vid of their follow up play

It's great!

I am no longer Secretary for the Cork Shakespearian Company.

I kind of didn't want to be anyway as my spelling and handwriting is terrible but other then that it wasn't bad.
There was just no way I could continue with the Loft.

I knew from 'As You Like It' that I couldn't manage another play and that was when I was only doing the course, now I'm on shift work there is no way I can do it.

I'll miss Stage Managing. I don't think I'll have time to do it again for quite a while

The last night of the show was yesterday.
All in all it went quite well. We had decent crowds all the nights so I doubt we are looking at a loss and there were no major disasters other then the projector braking down.
We were using a projector to do the scenery , mainly because we didn't have the time to paint the whole set. It work quite well until it blew halfway though the second half on opening night. We had to do the next night with a black wall in the back while we scrambled around looking for a replacement. It had to be a projector with a wide angle lens so it was harder then you'd think to find.
Thankfully we got one and, though it took some fiddling, we got everything working.

This show was also pretty light on the props and scene changes which was good because since I was working full time hours in my work experience I had to get a bus straight into town and do the show so I was absolutely wrecked.

But everything well and the crowds seemed to like it. So well done us.

I'm going to be a runner for some production company this evening so I still can't have a break but at lest it's only for 5 hours.

I'm on full time hours next week, which means I'll have to get up early to get the bus in, do work, go straight to town, do the show get home and collapse into bed only to do it all over again for a week. with no breaks.
I'm going to be exhausted.
xt1me: (my pirate flag one piece)
'As You Like It' has officially been pushed back a couple of weeks. Because too many actors were having trouble with availability.
xt1me: (my pirate flag one piece)
Wrangling actors is like herding cats at the best of times but some people haven't even confirmed if they're available for the show times, let along what days they're free for rehearsals.
And I can't get very involved myself because I'm swamped with course work.
xt1me: (my pirate flag one piece)
the poor director looked exhausted today.
An the play's not on until the end of may

Done!

The last night we finally got a decent crowd. It's a pity, but I think the timing just didn't work out. With that Donkey Darby that happened on Friday, blocking off the street, and the terrible weather, things just didn't work out as well as they could have.

Ideally I'd have gone down today to help tare down the set but I'm relent on a lift so that wasn't going to happen.

Still done now.
And we even did a Harlem Shake video because the sound guy had an app for it on their phone. (it's terrible and you can't even see me)

Better

There were some minor technical problems but the main one, putting on the narration to early and not putting on the lights, actually helped. I could have more time to change the set and the audience weren't left sitting in silence.
The few actor's that still need prompts needed less this time. Unfortunately some of the actors that didn't need prompts needed a few.
but other ten that it went well.
The Crucifixion scene went brilliantly.
My main problem was that my sage help never showed up and never told anyone. and since they already said they can't make for the last two shows I can't even fire them.

It was also freezing.
The lights we're using are pretty cool. There are new high-powered led lights that you change the colour of on the fly. No need to go up and swap gels or set up there different light for three different colour.
Unfortunately the also actually cool. And while this is more efficient an saves money on electricity, it also means that, whereas previously the stage lights would heat up the stage, everyone is left cold.

Sand?
SAND???
SAND?????!!!!!

What on earth possessed the Director to think that putting sand on the stage was a good idea?

Ok, maybe if the stage was set up for it and it was about an inch deep it would have been interesting, but scattering a bunch around the stage in clumps is just stupid.
You can’t even see it from the audience!
And it wasn’t even beach sand, it was builders sand. Actors are walking on the stage in bare feet, not to mention sitting, laying and falling on it. It’s tearing up their feet and getting in their costume. It’s also getting all over backstage. It going to be impossible to clean it all up. And it's covering up all the marks on the stage that they were using for their positions. And the ones we were using for placing the set. Finally, and this was the one that made the director finally see reason, it was too loud when being walked on, scraping across the stage, and the mics on the side of the stage was picking up the noise more than the actors voices.

Such a bad Idea.
But what can I expect from  someone who though using a live candles, and knocking them over, on a stage made of wood, cloth and cardboard was a good idea. Not to mention using a car seat as a throne. Do you have any idea how heavy car seats are?!

I can understand the appeal of these ideas but that’s why you have to think things through. That’s why you have a stage manager in the first place, To tell you that maybe it’s not such a good idea or just not practical.

If I only had enough time to be there for the whole set up we could have discussed it.
But I can’t be there, I doing a course and I need a lift down there from one of the actors. I have no time.

that went quite well.....if it had been a dress rehearsal.
In all fairness though, it went aright. No major disasters,

Dress

of all the things we're missing or could go wrong, I think the most worrying is I still don't have any way to contact the lighting and sound desks from back stage.
The cans I was supposed to use in broken and the back up set the lighting guy was going to borrow broke as well.
Someone might have to buy walky-talkies from a hardware store.
xt1me: (my pirate flag one piece)
I know I can't remember when a tech rehearsal was solely for a tech rehearsal, but it still annoys me. The actors should know everything by now or at least practice later. Lets get the tech worked out so we don't have to worry about it any more.
I also hate when we still have things to get done for the dress. It should be mostly finished by now.
We're still missing props.

Oh well. It's always like this. I wait until after the dress to panic.

ouch

I went to Youghall yesterday to help with the set. Unfortunately, the actor who was going to give me lift's car broke down. And I couldn't contact them because their mobile was broken.
I ended up contacting the director and getting the bus.
But.
When is was getting into my seat, what ever way I sat down, I missed the seat and landed in the middles of two seats, which wouldn't be a problem except, because it was on of those couch buses, they had seat belts so I sat on the buckle.
It now feels like I have a massive bruise on my tail-bone.

At least the set looking ok.
Tech. rehearsal today.

Something I noticed in 'As You Like It'. there seems to always be a bit of dialogue when there's a song to excuse or make fun of the singing.
Obviously when Shakespeare was writing the play not of his actor could actually sing

Rehearsal

Long car journey + overpowering air-freshener + late night + loud music + shouting + flashing lights + not enough water = MASSIVE HEADACHE

Still, other then that the rehearsal went well.
I really wont know the problems, though, until we get into the theatre.
xt1me: (my pirate flag one piece)
I just got a call from a friend looking for someone to do props for a film shot in June. Unfortunately, not only am is the course still on then but so is the end of the run of 'As You Like It'.
It's such a pity, I'd love to do it.
xt1me: (my pirate flag one piece)
And I soon might be busier.
I got a call from one of the actors from 'MacBeth'. They have a play in the works and want me to stage manage.
I defiantly love too but I don't know if I can.
The course I'm on is a full time one so I'll be pretty busy. We finally got a time table and one of the IT modules is during the time of the play as well as the assessment hat I'll get marked for. It's also down in Youghal so I don't know how I'll get there.

I get another call about it tomorrow and we'll try to meet up Sunday and we can figure out things then. We'll see how it goes.
xt1me: (my pirate flag one piece)
Well, for now.

We're going to use the community center for 6 months (one show) and see how it goes. But every one is to keep an eye out in case they find something better.

We had a look at the place in Blackpool and issues were raise with the extractor fan there. Not only is it a bit loud but it seems to be leaking oil or something, not to mention possible fumes.

The community hall came back to us about giving us a key to it, eliminating the major objection to the place.

We'll have a committee meeting next week and decide then.
