I probably shouldn’t have gone out last night, but it was the warp party for Midsummer’s Nights Dream. Well, I say wrap party. All it was was a bunch of us meeting up in the pub (Pat Buckley’s) and having chicken and chips. It’s a tradition. Nicer chicken than last year though.

It occurs to me that I haven’t really explained about the Loft properly, even though I've done two shows with it while I’ve had this journal.

The Cork Shakespearean Company, also known as ‘the Loft’, was founded in 1924 by some guy I can’t remember the name of right now. He wanted to get kids off the streets and doing something. It’s housed in basement of the Presbytery of the North Cathedral (yes it’s in the basement and it’s called ‘the Loft’) but it used to be above Linehan's Sweet Factory years and years ago (see, the name make more sense now) and there’s still a plaque there. Either way it’s always been in Shandon and it’s been around a loooong time. I think some of the props and costumes have been there since the start (not to maintain some of the senior members).

It’s an amateur company, which means none of us get paid, but that doesn’t mean they put on amateur plays. It’s always constrained by the budget, which is nothing, but we make do and I think we do well.

I’ve only been involved in two shows so far but I can safely say I won’t mind doing it again next year.
