I agreed to help a friend with this documentary thing he’s planning. He wants me to be production manager but really I’m assistant everything since it’s just the two of us. He’s got some very definite ideas, which is good because we can organise everything properly. But it’s also bad because one of those ideas is a sunrise shot. Yes a sunrise shot over cork in summer. Sunrise is before 6 in the morning. XP
He also wanted on of those glammer lights. You know when you see those rings of light in models eyes in photo shots? One of those. Now considering how much a real one costs and the fact we’d have to order one on the internet and it wouldn’t get here on time, I told him I’d make him one. I ended up making two. The first one I made using LEDs from two handheld torches I got in a pound shop. Unfortunately I didn’t have the right wire to use and, although it worked, it was far too awkward to put the batteries in and it didn’t have a proper switch. So I made another one using fairy lights. Of course, there’s not a lot of choice this time of year when it comes to fairy lights. The only one I found had butterflies on them and were a bit to blue. They also aren’t as bright as the LEDs. I got the butterflies off and attached it to cardboard. It’s doesn’t give much light but it does fit over the lens of a camera and it will give the ring effect.
The next thing I have to do is make a bounce board. A reflector board is usually just a sheet of polystyrene but there are no building sites nearby at the moment for me to ask for a sheet so I’m just going to tape the back of a poster to some cardboard.
We’ll look at the locations tomorrow and shot some test shots and get some cutaway shots. We’ll film the people he wants to interview during the week.
