Looking though my old fanfic makes me remember how I started writing it.
The first fic I ever wrote was before I even knew what fanfiction was. It was, what I now know is, a self-insert Sonic the hedgehog fanfic. It was for school, one of those ‘what I did on my summer holidays’ essays (I was always careful to ask if the stories had to be true, they never did) and I think I was in first class so of course it was lame. From what I remember it had the predictable plot of me getting to their world somehow and meeting up with Sonic and Tails (my favourite character) and going on adventures before waking up to realise it was only a dream but then finding the ring or star or whatever it was that Sonic gave me.
I don’t mind admitting to this for two reasons. 1. I was a little kid, of course I wasn’t going to write something good (I don’t have excuse anymore) and 2. It’s not on the internet and the hardcopy’s been missing for decades so no one will ever see it. Hahahahahaha!
But yeah, I did write one or two other fanfic for essays in class but I never named the characters and always kept them vague enough that you couldn’t tell I had a specific character/setting in mind. I fact I may have made them too vague. Oh well.
One of things that bugged me about English class, actually, was the fact that the teachers never commentated on the content of the stories, only the fact that they were full of spelling mistakes. Yes I know, I did the test, I am dyslexic (not a lot, just enough so I have trouble with spelling, not enough to get me out of doing anything). I mean, most of my stories tended to be sci-fi and occasionally fantasy in a class full of people handing up unoriginal fiction (not that they were bad of course, some of them were really good) you could at lest tell me if you liked the story and not just scribble red everywhere. But I ranted on this enough.
I don’t have a lot of fics written, not only because of the spelling thing (spell check is wonderful) but also because I just don’t have the stamina to write long pieces. I’m also not a very fast typer, so it takes me even longer to write something and I get lazy and give up. I also don’t have the patience to go over something again and again to refine it.
That’s why I started this journal, to get writing more, even if it’s junk.
Humm, This must be the longest thing I’ve written so far. I guess it’s working.
