I used to belong to Cork Circus Skills. It was a club where you learn various circus skills (obviously) like juggling, stilt walking, unicycle riding etc. They got shut down after awhile because for some insurance reason. I've heard they're up and running again now but I haven't been back.
But it was with them that I got into the St. Patrick's Day parade one year. We had this devil theme going and the instructors were juggling fire. I was doing staff twirling with a pitch fork. It was a lot of fun. We had to make all our costumes, help with a float, work out routines we wanted to do if the parade had to stop for a while.
I was told afterwards that a friend saw me but because I didn't have my glasses one I didn't see them, despite being right next to them at one point.
I was also in one other parade with them as a stilt walker. I could do some stilt walking before I joined but it was the highest stilts I've been on. I remember how tiring it was doing that because when you're on stilt you can't stop moving of you'll fall over. There are ways to balance yourself if there three or more of you so you can rest for a bit though.
It was all great fun.
I might volunteer for the Dragon of Shandon next year. I know a few people in Art Link and a Halloween parade would be fun.
