They closed the walkway. What the hell?!

I live on a hill. Maybe it’s not the tallest hill around but it’s still a pain to slog up it.

Today, I was trudging up the stupid thing and I turn a corner and what do I see? A brand new, bright, shiny, green FENCE!

 

What!

 

WHY!

 

You actually went out of your way to build a fence to block off the walkway. For what reason?

 

I vaguely remembered there was a small notice at the entrance to the walkway and I went to check it. And did I see a reason? No. There was something about a public walkway act and reference to a map that wasn’t there but it did say the walkway was to be closed and who you could write to. And maybe you think I should have known about it then. The thing is, I remember skimming over the notice when it went up. Last year. Not only that but I remember noting at the time that it was two months after the deadline for complaints. What sense does that make?

 

Why did they close the walkway?!

I mean I could guess at a few reasons but I have no way of knowing.

 

Why did they wait a year?!

Yes, fine, county council, I know. When do the government do anything on time?

 

Why did they cut off the most direct way up the hill?!

 

Do you want to know why I'm so mad about this? Because it could kill me. Now the most direct way up the hill is up the main road. The road all the cars use. The road that doesn’t have a footpath for half of it. The road the twists and turns and has a blind corner near the top! Did anyone out there think of this?

To make matters worse I usually only ever walk up the hill when it’s dark because there’s a bus route now that goes to the top of the hill but it stops in the evening. 

 

So now my only choices are the death road or an even longer route up the hill where I’ll still be near a road for half of it but will at least have a foot path.

 

I liked that route. Sure it was still steep and the trees needed to be cut back in a few places but it was direct and sheltered. Why did they waste time and money building a fence to block a walkway I’m pretty sure the stupid council made in the first place.
